Saving & Investing For Your Future: Questions to Ask Yourself Now

Finding money to put into savings can seem difficult, but there are some strategies that can make it easier. Start by asking yourself these questions.

Do I have savings goals? Knowing how much you want to save and why can help you stick to a plan. For example, if you have a young child, ask yourself if you plan to help pay for college. Research indicates that children who have a college savings fund are more likely to go to college than those who don’t. Learn more about college planning at www.studentaid.ed.gov/prepare-for-college.

How can I spend less? Review how much you spent in the last month and consider ways to cut back. Also try to pay less in interest. For example, if you have multiple loans, pay off the ones with the highest interest rates first. And, regularly reviewing your credit report and correcting errors can result in considerable savings on loans and insurance policies.

Do I have emergency savings? Financial experts generally recommend that you have at least six months of living expenses in a savings account. The idea is to help you withstand a major reduction in income, such as a job loss, or to pay for a major, unexpected home or car repair. To build your rainy day fund, consider a combination of regular, automated deposits and any windfalls you receive, like a tax refund or a bonus at work.

Am I saving money on a regular basis? Automatic transfers into savings on a set schedule – such as once a month or every payday -- can help you save money before you spend it.

Am I saving enough for retirement? For many, the answer is "no" even when they think it is "yes." Options include workplace retirement plans and Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) offered by many credit unions, banks and investment companies.

Many working people can save considerably on their taxes through qualified retirement savings. If your employer offers a retirement savings program, find out whether it will match your investment contributions, and make sure you contribute enough to get the full match.

Down Payment Assistance Up to $5,000 For Qualified Homebuyers

Qualified homebuyers could receive up to $5,000 to assist with down payment and closing costs through the Federal Home Loan Bank’s Welcome Home program.

To apply for the grant, homebuyers must meet certain guidelines:

  • Total income for all occupants who will reside in the home cannot exceed 80% of the Mortgage Revenue Bond Limit for the county where the property is located. In Delaware, Fairfield, Franklin, Licking, Madison & Pickaway counties, that limit is $59,600 for households of one to two people and $68,540 for households of three or more.
  • Homebuyers must contribute at least $500 of their own funds towards the down payment and/or closing costs.
  • Homebuyers must have a purchase contract on an eligible property dated on or after March 1, 2018.
  • First-time homebuyers (defined as anyone who hasn’t owned a home in the past three years) must complete a homebuyer counseling course prior to loan closing. Applicants do not have to be first-time homebuyers.

In addition, applicants must be purchasing an eligible property:

  • The property will be the buyer’s primary residence.
  • The property is a single family, townhome, condominium, duplex, multi-unit (up to four units) or a qualified manufactured home.
  • The household may be required to repay all or a portion of the grant if the home is sold or refinanced within five years.
